I am breaking my plan of not writing on the weekends because, well, I didn’t write yesterday.
My last post was cut a little bit short when it was announced that in-person classes were canceled for the remainder of the school year. I think that phrasing is really important. School is not canceled for the rest of the school year, just the in-person part. We had that talk with our own kids on Thursday.
This was not like the last day of school before summer break. In fact, this probably means they will have MORE work to do than they have in the past couple of weeks. “Distance Learning” is going to begin on April 13th for Sturgis students, whether they (and we) are ready or not.
Teachers in our district will be spending next week preparing. In case you are wondering as you are reading this, “What is that going to look like?”,
the answer is, “I HAVE NO FREAKING CLUE!”
By the way, in case you haven’t figured this out yet, or you don’t know me that well, this meme is 100% me.
I am not very good at holding my tongue or not speaking up. It’s a gift and a curse really.
Now that we’ve established this, I want to say,
I HATE THAT WE HAVE TO TEACH VIA A COMPUTER AND/OR PACKETS!
Every other teacher I know feels the same way. This sucks. I want to be in my classroom with kids. I’ve had opportunities to apply for online teaching positions in the past. Nope. No thanks, not for me. I don’t know how to do this. And neither does anyone else. We (teachers and administrators) were not trained for this.
But I can promise you this, we’re going to figure this sh…I mean stuff out.
Just remember, every teacher, building, district is going to look different. Please don’t compare teachers to other teachers, or schools to other schools, or districts to other districts. I promise you, we are all going to do the best we can, and I have faith in my fellow educators that we’re going to kill it. Just give us some time. We’ll figure out how to do this the same way we’ve figured out how to adapt to every change that’s been made in education since, you know, FOREVER!
Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
As always, stay safe, stay healthy, STAY HOME, and always remember, PEOPLE CARE ABOUT YOU!
