Day 4: March 19th, 2020
The kids are continuing to adapt to their new schedule. The rain and grey skies are not necessarily helping, as we did not get much outside time at all yesterday. I should give a shout out to Jay and Norah’s teachers, who put together packets for their kids. That really helped out with math time yesterday. I love me some journaling and reading time, but I have struggled with math and science time in the last couple of days. Having a packet for the kids for math definitely made it easier to work with them. I can pick out triangles, circles, squares, and rectangles like it’s my job!
On a personal note, I went to Walgreen’s yesterday to get some allergy medicine and saw a former student working. She asked me if I was enjoying my time away from school. I told her that it was definitely not “time off” and that I truly missed going to school every day. Sometimes my sarcasm and the constant angry look on my face gives off the impression that I do not like what I do. By the way, I can’t help how my face looks, people have been telling me for years I look mad all the time. However, despite some of the exterior signals I give off, I LOVE my job. From the time I realized that I was not going to play in the NBA, or even college basketball, I wanted to be a teacher. I love the randomness, I love the challenges, I love the students. I love the fact that I can have a perfect lesson plan, and that a class can start a discussion and that lesson plan goes out the window because the discussion is just too good NOT to have. I love that multiple basketball players said they will miss our “life talks”. Seriously, how many people get to have “life talks” on a regular basis?! Teaching is my calling, and the calling of so many other friends and colleagues here at SPS. This time at home, if nothing else, will help me appreciate going to work each day and getting to do what I love.
OK, switching tracks here, let’s talk about stupid people.
I know I am not the first to make this comparison, but I feel like the people in charge of the beaches in Florida are eerily similar to the mayor from Jaws, and the Spring Breakers are the people who go to the beach in that movie.
There was an interview last night on the CBS evening news with what I can only assume to be a college student, and he said, “If I get Corona, I get Corona. At the end of the day, I’m not gonna let it stop me from partying.”
Seriously, at what point do these people flocking to the beaches stop sucking at life?!?!
I understand wanting to “live your life” but in a time when we are going through an experience that none of us have ever been through, we all must be willing to do and behave in ways that we have never done before. I am sure I held a much more selfish viewpoint as a college kid than I do now, but I sincerely believe that I would not have placed partying above contributing to the well being of not only my community but the nation and the world. I believe that people are truly good, and sometimes just need to be reminded. So let’s learn a lesson from Jaws and let’s put the good of the whole in front of the individual good and do what we can to help.
Stay safe, stay healthy, and always remember PEOPLE CARE ABOUT YOU!
