Day 1 review, and my personal struggles with our current situation.
I should probably knock on wood before I say this, but Day 1 at home went, for the most part, REALLY good.
My kids were honestly fantastic yesterday. They were dead set on following the “schedule” that my wife put together. I have had a few people ask what our plan was so I thought I would share it. My wife came up with it, wrote in on the board. I’m pretty sure she just came up with it, so I can take no credit whatsoever. Those of you who know us know that this is pretty much always the case.
While it may look to be a pretty daunting schedule, we were and will continue to be super flexible. Math and science yesterday consisted of Norah and Tessa measuring and making chocolate chip cookies from scratch, and Jay and I putting together his model of the Edmund Fitzgerald (as seen in the picture of the schedule). We are planning to take some nature walks and identify leaves/plants/animal tracks, etc. which the kids are really excited about. The times are flexible, as we switched around art with math and science yesterday because there was a cool live art video on Facebook that the kids wanted to try.
So why is Day 2 more challenging than Day 1? The novelty of being at home has worn off. We have asked them to take care of laundry, insert gasp here, and they are not fans. They are fighting with each other more already, and I am only half a cup of coffee in!
So, let’s move past my kids and take a look at us as adults. I don’t know about you guys (if anyone is actually reading this) but I am finding it hard not to fall down the rabbit hole of information overload on this virus/social distancing/economic disaster. While I want to keep myself informed and aware of what is going on, and new developments, I have to take a breath and realize that I don’t need to know the second something develops. My goal today is to be less focused on breaking news and more focused on being present with my family.
So yes, we are doing what we are asked to do with social distancing, but I do not want the news cycle to distance me from the people right in front of me.
Stay safe, stay healthy, and always remember, PEOPLE CARE ABOUT YOU!
